The heart-lung machine is used during major heart surgery. Blood is taken from the veins, then oxygen is added and carbon dioxide remove via the spinning disc. The gaseous exchange between blood and air occurs more easily if there is a thin film of blood, the disc creates this thin film. The blood is then pumped back into the main artery via the filter that removes clots and bubbles.
